Tips for Saving Money at College

Savemoney

For college students, being out on your own can be very exciting. You’re finally on the way to starting your life, and away from your parents!  However, with the new found freedom comes great responsibility: learning how to spend your money wisely.  Here are some tips to help you learn how to save money.

1. Attend campus activities- Colleges offer a wide variety of on campus events for entertainment, such as movie or game nights, and musical performances.  Instead of going to the movies or the mall (where you will be spending money), go to the campus events since these are typically free to students.

2.  Rent or buy used textbooks- These options tend to be significantly cheaper than buying your textbooks new.

3Pay bills on time- Forgetting to pay a credit card or phone bill can result in extra late fees, which in return means more money you have to spend.

4.  Make your own coffee- Energy is definitely needed for those long days in class, but consistently buying your coffee at coffee shops can add up with those expensive prices.  Instead, try to make your own coffee in your dorm or apartment to take with you to class.

5. Buy generic products- If possible, buy the store brand generic products when shopping for food and other necessities.  Think about what name brands you can live without, and switch to the generic brand!

6. Bring your own snacks to class- Instead of eating out, or on campus where your meal plans are not accepted, try to pack your own food and snacks to eat in class or when you have a break between classes.

7. Don’t bring a car to school- If you can live without a car on campus, you can save tons of money on gas and campus parking passes if you simply do not bring your car to school.  Try to use public transportation, or even ride a bike or walk if where you need to go is close to your college.

Remember, to bring in extra money, you can always talk to your school’s career center.  They can help you to find a job on campus and even off campus if you are in need of money and have the ability to balance school and a job.

Music: An Appreciation 6th Brief Edition

Textbook

For students wanting to learn more about music, Music: An Appreciation is a must have textbook.  Author of this textbook, Roger Kamien, received his B.A. in Musicology from Columbia and his M.A. and PhD. from Princeton. He also organized and taught Music Appreciation courses for 2 years at Hunter College and an impressive 20 years at Queens College.

This textbook introduces students to musical elements, forms, and musical periods in a chronological order.  Along with engaging pictures, the textbook features musical notation, in order to help students further understand the musical concepts.  Although it is not required for a student to know how to read music notation, for those that do, the notation in the book is a great help.

Music: An Appreciation also features listening guides.  The listening guides help to focus students on innovative musical events as they unfold though music history.  Also, this textbook is accompanied with a CD comprised of songs by various composers, which help the listener fully understand the distinguishing musical themes of the period they were created in.

In summary, Music: An Appreciation is a great textbook for students taking a Music Appreciation course, and for students who simply want to learn more about music.

How to Rent Textbooks

For rent

Since we all know how pricy some textbooks can get, renting your college textbooks is a great way to save money.  For someone who has never rented a textbook, the process can seem confusing at first but CheapestTextbooks.com has made it easy.

The first step is to enter the book title, author, or ISBN code in the search bar at the top of the page.  CheapestTextbooks.com searches other textbook sites and compiles a list of the best deals available for that textbook.  At the top of the page is a Quick Price Check box which gives you a general idea of the price of the book if you choose to buy it new, used, rent for various time frames or purchase in e-textbook format.  It also gives you an idea of how much you could expect to sell the book back for.

Next is a detailed list of various rental options.  You pick which deal is better for you, keeping in mind the price, length of the rental period, and the shipping cost.  After deciding, all you have to do is click the “rent now” button next to the option you want, and enter in your payment and shipping information.  Then you’re done!

Once your semester is over, and you are finished with your rented textbooks, all you have to do is ship them back to the merchant.  Just don’t forget to send them back before the rental period is over, since late returns can result in extra fees!

E-Textbooks

Etextbooks

Another, more modern way to get your college textbooks is through e-textbooks.  Depending on your personal preferences, e-textbooks may or may not be a good choice for textbooks.  Here are some pros and cons of e-textbooks to help you make your decision.

 Pros

  1. You don’t have to worry about selling the physical book back
  2. They are environmentally friendly!- since they don’t require paper
  3. You don’t have to lug around heavy textbooks
  4. Your textbook is instantly available to you- all you have to do is search for the book, click download, and it’s yours!

 Cons

  1. Portability- you need to carry a computer or reading device in order to read them
  2. Many textbooks are still not offered in e-textbook form
  3. Can be susceptible to viruses and technical difficulties
  4. You are not able to sell some e-textbooks back, which can mean a loss of money for you
  5. It is almost always the most expensive non new book option
  6. They often expire after 180 days

With the increase of inexpensive mobile devices, small computers and various book readers, e-textbooks can be a good option, especially if you are not likely to sell your books back when finished and you don’t mind not having a physical book in your hands.

Buying vs. Renting Textbooks

Rent-or-buy

We all know that acquiring your college textbooks can put a significant dent in your wallet.  A common question for students is, “Should I buy or rent my textbooks?”  Below we have laid out the pros and cons of each, to help you make the decision that is right for you.

Renting

When you rent a book, you pay a fee to rent the book for a specific time frame.  When time  is up, print out a prepaid shipping label, and mail the book back to the merchant without any shipping charges to you.

Pros:

  • Generally cheaper
  • Guarantee to get rid of the book after semester is over
  • Don’t have to worry about reselling the textbook

Cons:

  • Supplemental software may be required and does not come with rental books
  • Can get charged fees if you do not return the book by the due date

Buying

When buying a textbook, you have the choice to buy it used or new.  Used books can be substantially cheaper than new books.

Pros:

  • You can keep the book if you would like to
  • You can sell the textbook back for money

 Cons:

  • Can be more expensive than renting textbooks
  • There is a possibility that you will not sell the book after you are finished with it because no one will buy it

The good news is you have a choice and can make that choice per book depending upon each individual circumstance.

How to Sell Textbooks

Sell_textbooks

One of the most stressful things about college textbooks is that the editions change so frequently.  If you happen to get stuck with an “outdated” edition of a textbook, your college bookstore most likely will not buy it back from you, or if they do, you barely get any money for it. That’s where CheapestTextbooks.com comes in.

Selling your unwanted textbooks through CheapestTextbooks.com is easy!  All you have to do is follow these three simple steps:

  1. In the search bar, type in the title of the book, author, or ISBN code
  2. Make sure the book found on CheapestTextbooks.com matches your textbook
  3. Review the price comparison from various vendors to get your best price Click the “sell now” button next to the merchant option of your choice

Our selling comparison gives you the option to sell your textbook for the highest price.  Since merchants are competing with other merchants for your business, they are more willing to give you the best price they can for your used textbook.

Hint:  to ensure you get the highest price you can for a used textbook, take good care of it while you are using it.  Avoid things like highlighting, writing notes in the margin, or folding pages in the book since these things can decrease the value of your book.  Who would want a book covered in highlighter and a stranger’s old notes?  Not many people, so take care of your textbooks if you know you eventually plan on selling them.

When the semester is over go to CheapestTextbooks.com to sell your old and buy your new textbooks!
